About Ayurveda:
Gradually accumulated practical and systemic medical knowledge in India is called Ayurveda.
Ayurveda (pronounced. I-YOUR-VAY-DA). The science of life ,prevention and longevity is the oldest and most holistic or comprehensive medical system available . It is said yo be a world medicine. Medical knowledge from all areas of the world gathered in India, and the famous sage Vyasa, put into writing the complete knowledge of Ayurveda.
IN Ayurveda the methods used to acquaire this knowledge of uses of herbs ,food,gems,aromas ,colours,yoga,mantras,lifestyle and surgery.Three main ancient ayurvedic text that are still used today are the Charaka samhita,Sushrut samhitha and the ashtangha hridaya samhitha.These books are belived to be over 1200 years old.These texts still contain the original and complete knowledge of this Ayurvedic world medicine.
Ayurveda divided systematically into 8 branches:
Branch Meaning
1. Kaya chikita – Internal medicine.
2. Bala – Pediatrics.
3. Graha – Treatment of disease arising from possession by pathogens, evil sprits.
4. Urdhvanga -Dealing with Eyes, Ear, Nose, Throat.
5. Salya – Surgery including plastic surgery.
6.Danstra – poisons(Toxicology)
7. Rasayana – Diseases of advancing age.
8. Prasuthi – Gynecology and obstetrics. Insect bites,
Basic concepts of Ayurveda:
Vyadhi or disease in Ayurveda is due to imbalance of three fundamental elements of the body. These are VATA,PITTA,KAPHA. The entire universe is made of Five mahabhootas or great elements. They are
1. Akasa (space)
2. Vaayu (Air)
3.Tejas( Light)
4.Jala(water)
5.Prithvi(Earth)
